Cal Baseball Tops Boston College, 7-4

BERKELEY, CA - Cal received solid pitching for sophomore starter Brian Montalbo and recorded 14 hits on the way to a 7-4 victory over visiting Boston College Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improved to 7-6, while the Eagles go to 3-2. Cal had won the first game of the series, 10-4, Friday.
Montalbo (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, going 6.0 innings with five hits, no runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Sophomore Matt Brown picked up his second save of the year and the 10th of his career, striking out Boston College's Brian Macchi with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning.
Sophomores David Weiner (3-for-5, triple) and Brian Horwitz (3-for-3) had three hits apiece for the Bears, while David Nicholson, Carson White and Conor Jackson had two hits each. Jackson, who has gotten a hit in all 13 of Cal's games this season, hit a home run in the eighth inning.
The losing pitcher for the Eagles was starter Mark Sullivan (1-1, 6.0 innings, 12 hits, five runs, three earned runs, one walk, four strikeout). Jeff Mackor went 3-for-3 with a double for Boston College, and pinch hitter Eric Wright had a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.
Cal hosts Boston College in the third game of the three-game series Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
