Cougars Pull Off Sweep At Texas Tourney
Feb. 23, 2002
COLLEGE STATION, Texas --Washington State swept both games of a doubleheader Saturday at the Texas A&M Continental Classic at Olsen Field.
In the first game, the Cougars defeated Kentucky 7-3 behind the complete-game efforts of Eddie Bonine, and in the afternoon game, the Cougars defeated the host, Texas A&M, 7-5, to improve their record to 5-4.
'This was some very good competition,' WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. 'The best thing was, we played hard all day and we played better longer than anyone else today.'
In the first game, Bonine (2-1) gave up eight hits while striking out eight and walking seven for the Cougars. Cory Hahn (1-2), the third Kentucky (3-3) pitcher, took the loss, giving up four runs, all earned, in 2.1 innings.
'Eddie was struggling, he was laboring,' Mooney said. 'But we told him to force the action and after that he stepped it up and was very effective.'
Derek Bruce's two-run home run, his fourth of the season, in the second, started the scoring for the Cougars. WSU added another run in the fourth on a single by Brandon Reddinger that scored Jeff LaRue, to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Kentucky knotted the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars broke-out in their half of the eighth, scoring four runs. Jon Baeder's single scored LaRue to start the Cougar run. Evan Hecker followed with a double that scored Baeder and Steve Mortimer. Bookie Gates followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Justin Hart.
In Game two, the Cougars won in seven innings on clutch hitting. Brent Robertson singled in Bruce and LaRue to provide the winning runs in the top of the seventh.
'Bruce has been big for us and Robertson just came through with a clutch hit,' Mooney said. 'They just came through in a tight situation and helped us get those two runs.'
'Niles kept us in it,' Mooney said. 'We told him to hold the score where it was and let the offense come-back. He was in a good groove.'
WSU scored first, when Gates' single plated Hecker to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after one inning. The Aggies answered with three runs in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. But WSU rallied back, scoring two runs each in the game's final three innings.
In the fifth inning, Baeder scored on a fielder's choice and Gates singled in Hart. In the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Wes Falkenborg's single scored Bruce and Robertson to tie the game at five, setting the table for WSU's game-clinching scores in the seventh.
WSU continues play in Texas Sunday, with a 5 p.m. game against Texas A&M at Olsen Field on the third day of the four-day tournament.
