Gymnasts Fall To. No. 10 UCLA, 197.550-194.925
Feb. 23, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Competing for the second time in as many nights, the No. 19 Oregon State gymnastics team dropped a dual meet to No. 10 UCLA, 197.550-194.925, at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night.
The Beavers defeated Cal State Fullerton on Friday to start the weekend.
'I'm proud of the way they fought this weekend. This back-to-back weekend will take this team far,' said coach Tanya Chaplin. 'This gives us a lot of experience that we can build on the rest of the season.'
Tanya Ricioli, competing in the all-around for the second night in a row, picked up her third 39+ score of the season and second of the weekend after scoring a 39.175. Annie Campbell also surpassed the 39.0 mark, scoring a 39.200 after competing on just three events Friday.
The Bruins won every event, but the Beavers picked up two top three finishes. Campbell took second on beam with a career-high 9.925, while Elizabeth Jillson's 9.90 on bars earned third place.
The Beavers opened up the meet with a six-for-six effort on bars to post a 48.925 on the event, highlighted by Jillson's 9.90 - her fifth score of 9.90 or better this season. Ricioli scored a 9.85 for OSU's second-best score, while Campbell chipped in a 9.775.
Meanwhile, Jamie Dantzscher's 9.925 vault - which eventually proved to be the winning one on that event - led the Bruins to a 49.150 score after one rotation.
Thrse Videan led the OSU vault team with a 9.80 to place fourth. Ricioli scored a 9.70, but no other Beavers scored above a 9.625 on the event as OSU finished with a 48.150.
UCLA countered with a 49.350 on bars, highlighted by Dantzscher's near-perfect 9.975, to take a 98.500-97.025 lead at the midway point.
OSU totaled a 48.875 on floor in the third rotation, with Campbell (9.875) and Jerra Lopez (9.80) leading the way.
That gave the Beavers a 145.950 heading into the final rotation, but UCLA used an impressive 49.475 on beam to build its lead to more than two points (147.975). The Bruins, who didn't count a beam score lower than 9.875, were led by Alyssa Beckerman's 9.95 routine.
Campbell also led the Beavers on beam, scoring a career-high 9.925 for the second night in a row to place second on the event. Lopez rebounded from Friday's fall to score a career-high 9.875 on her beam routine, and Ricioli matched her season-high set just one night before with a 9.85.
Dantzscher led the Bruins on floor with her sixth straight perfect 10.0 on the event and ended up winning the all-around with a 39.800.
