No. 11 Softball Wins Two More At Leadoff Classic
Feb. 23, 2002
COLUMBUS, Ga. - -
The No. 11 Oregon State softball team won a pair of games Saturday, defeating Southern Miss 2-0 and Penn State 5-3 in the second day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Beavers (15-3) advanced to the silver bracket in the 16-team tournament with the win over Southern Miss on Saturday morning, and moved into the silver bracket championship semifinal to face No. 6 Washington Sunday morning with the win over Penn State. OSU went 2-1 in pool play and is 3-1 overall at the tournament.
OSU took advantage of its opportunities though, as the Beavers were able to manufacture runs by capitalizing on a USM error in the fourth, and then put another run on the board in the fifth with a Clare Burnum RBI double.
Junior second baseman Brynnen Guthrie, who leads the team in runs scored this year, reached first on an error by USM second baseman Melanie Hymel to open the fourth inning. After junior Shelly Prochaska moved Guthrie to second with a sacrifice bunt, freshman shortstop Kelly Petersen brought Guthrie in with a single to make it 1-0.
In the fifth, freshman Miranda Dellinger pinch ran for catcher Traci Feldt after she drew a walk to lead off the frame. One out later, with Dellinger on second, Burnum roped a RBI double that brought Dellinger in for what proved to be the final run of the game and a 2-0 advantage.
Burnum, who leads the team with a .452 batting average, also leads the way with nine doubles on the year and has moved into a tie for sixth on the OSU career list with 21.
Hoffman, a sophomore, and Draper combined to strike out 12 batters. Hoffman (3-1) earned the win on 5 1/3 innings, and struck out nine in the process.
OSU's pitching and defense never allowed a USM runner past second base.
'It was good to win, but it was frustrating because, had we really gone out and attacked and scored more runs, we would have been playing in the Gold Bracket (with a chance to win the tournament),' eighth-year coach Kirk Walker said. 'It was frustrating because we didn't score as much as we should have.'
In the second contest, it was Prochaska that sent a three-run blast over the left field wall to bring in Guthrie and Burnum in the fifth for what proved to be the winning runs in a 5-3 contest.
The Beavers opened with two runs in the first inning, as OSU loaded the bases twice with two outs.
Jodoin brought in the first run with a RBI base hit to second that scored freshman Alana Mendoza from third. With the bases still loaded, right fielder Steph Adams took a walk and brought in Prochaska to make it 2-0.
The Nittany Lions (3-6) did all of their scoring in the second, when third baseman Jennifer Tripken roped a single to left center off starter Kristen Hunter to bring in two unearned runs. Erin Norton singled in Penn State's final run to give the Lions a temporary 3-2 advantage.
After relieving junior Kristen Hunter in the fourth, Draper pitched a perfect 3 2/3 innings to shut the door on the Lions, striking out eight in the process to improve her record to 8-1 on the year.
'We jumped out on top in the first and scored a couple runs,' Walker said. 'Kristen Hunter threw a pretty good ballgame, but then we didn't play very good defense and gave up three unearned runs. Crystal came in and did a great job of shutting them down.
'Shelly Prochaska had a big three-run homerun. We played very strong over the last three innings offensively and defensively, and Crystal did a good job of shutting the door.
