No. 5 Cal Takes Two More at UCSB Invite
Feb. 23, 2002
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On the strength of Jocelyn Forest's season-high 15 strikeout performance and Veronica Nelson's three-run eighth inning homerun to left center, California (14-4) defeated Cal Poly (8-6), 4-1, in the night cap in the second day of the UCSB 'Softball by the Beach' Invitational. The Golden Bears took down tournament host, UCSB (8-12), 3-1, in the first game.
In the first game, the Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior Veronica Nelson led off with a single to center. Courtney Scott bunted over pinch runner Roni Rodrigues to second and scored on a throwing error on Chelsea Spencer's infield dribbler. Spencer also scored in the second stanza.
In the third, freshman Kaleo Eldredge legged out an infield single. Kristen Morley's sacrifice hit moved Eldredge to second. Harper collected her team-leading 14th RBI of the season with a single to center.
UCSB came back in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they laid down four consecutive bunts, including two base hits and two sacrifice attempts for one run.
In a seven-inning performance, freshman Kelly Anderson notched her first collegiate win, striking out three, scattering four base hits and allowing one earned run.
Cal made several impressive defensive stops against the Gauchos. In the bottom of the second, Spencer robbed Holly Streed of a base hit to center as the freshman shortstop stretched out to snag the line drive hit. Scott also contributed to the defensive effort as she caught UCSB's Chantal Pershing off of second base. Pershing, with no options but to attempt third base, was putout by Spencer at third. Freshman second baseman Jessica Pamanian saved a base hit from going through the middle infield, when she dove for the grounder and threw out Jami Trinidad at first.
The scored remained knotted at zero-all for the entire game. Forest pitched six and two third innings of no-hit ball, at one point, striking out 10 consecutive Mustang batters. Cal Poly had the Bears on the ropes in the bottom of the seventh, but with two outs and the bases loaded, Gemma Dalena flied out to center to end the inning.
Going into extra innings, the international tie-breaker rule went into effect - each team starting off the inning with a runner on second base. In Cal's half of the inning, the Bears scored quickly as Pamanian scored on a pop up by Candace Harper, who reached base after Mustang second baseman Kasey Poet dropped the ball. Nelson then smacked a three-run homer, her third of the season, to put Cal up, 4-0.
Cal Poly scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, but never threatened as Forest tallied her sixth complete game of the year. She walked four batters, but gave up just two hits in eight innings.
Cal concludes the UCSB 'Softball by the Beach' Invitational tomorrow when they face Illinois at 9 a.m. at Elings Park. Next week, the Bears travel to the Fullerton Worth Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
