Baseball Completes Sweep With 6-3 Win at UCLA
Feb. 24, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Senior Bill Peavey's monster solo home run Sunday proved to be the game-winner and the No. 18 USC Trojans completed a three-game non-conference series sweep with a 6-3 victory against the UCLA Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sophomore Jon Williams threw 3 1/3 innings of relief (4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) to register his first collegiate win for the Trojans.
USC (5-5) handed UCLA (7-9) its sixth straight loss. The Trojans have won 12 of the last 15 meetings between the two schools.
The Bruins got on the scoreboard first when Ryan Rasmussen hit a sacrifice fly to right in the second, scoring third baseman Kevin Conlin. UCLA starter Casey Janssen kept the Trojans scoreless until the fifth when USC designated hitter Joey Metropoulos hit his second home run in as many games with a solo shot to center.
UCLA used another sacrifice fly in the sixth when Matt Thayer scored on All-America candidate Ben Francisco's drive. Francisco went 0-for-9 in the weekend series.
The Trojans took the lead in the seventh with two outs. Shortstop Michael Moon singled to left and advanced to second on a balk call against reliever David Johnson. Center fielder Brian Barre was intentionally walked to get to senior left fielder Kris Cox, who was 0-for-3 to that point with two strikeouts. Cox, however, came through with a two-run double to right, giving the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
Adam Berry answered in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot off Williams to tie the game before Peavey belted his go-ahead homer in the eighth. An RBI single by Moon in the eighth and an RBI single in the ninth by Peavey completed the Trojans' scoring. Peavey went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI on the afternoon.
Freshman Brett Bannister went 5 2/3 innings for the Trojans, allowing two runs on three hits.
USC will compete in the 2002 Kia Baseball Bash next weekend in Fullerton, Calif. The Trojans will face defending national champion Miami on Friday (March 1) at 2:30 p.m., Houston on Saturday (March 2) at 2:30 p.m. and host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday (March 3) at 5:30 p.m. Pacific time. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
