BERKELEY, CA - Cal scored 16 runs on 15 hits and four Bear pitchers combined for a one-hitter as Cal defeated visiting Boston College, 16-0 Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improved to 8-6, while the Eagles go to 3-3. Cal swept the three-game series, winning 10-4 Friday and 7-4 Saturday.
Freshman right-hander Brent Hale picked up his first collegiate win (1-0), pitching 6.0 innings with one hit, no runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Senior Ryan Atkinson, sophomore Blake Read and senior Arthur Gross also threw for the Bears.
Sophomore shortstop Jeff Dragicevich had a big day at the plate for Cal, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Carson White, Conor Jackson and Brian Horwitz had two hits apiece, with White hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning and freshman center field Justin Nelson hitting a three-run homer in the second inning. Sophomore David Weiner hit his second triple of the season in the second inning and Nelson finished the day with four RBI, hitting a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
The Bears scored five runs in the second inning, a run in the third, seven runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.
The losing pitcher for the Eagles was starter Matt Lederhos (0-1, 2.0 innings, five hits, six runs, two walks). Vinny Scavone got Boston College's lone hit with a single to right in the third inning.
Cal next hosts Centenary Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
