Fifth-ranked Bears Lay Waste to Illinois, 8-0
Feb. 24, 2002
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman Cassie Bobrow threw a perfect game, striking out two batters and walking none in five innings before the mercy rule went into effect, as California (15-4) defeated Illinois (9-6), 8-0, Sunday morning at Elings Park. The victory also capped a five-game sweep of the UCSB 'Softball by the Beach' Invitational for the Bears, extending their winning streak to 11 games.
Cal's five-run scoring barrage in the top of the third inning came, in part, courtesy of freshman Jessica Pamanian's grand slam over the left field fence. It was also Pamanian's first collegiate home run - and it came in style.
Cal scored two more in the second inning when Jessica Pamanian singled in Jessica Vernaglia from third. Eldredge moved Pamanian over to second and was brought in on Kristen Morley's single to left field.
Before Pamanian's round tripper, the Bears added a run in that inning as Scott's second sac fly of the morning brought in Candace Harper from third.
Although Bobrow struck out just two hitters, she pitched her way out of some unfavorable pitch counts, giving the defense behind her a chance to make plays.
'I don't think that I really threw the best game, in terms of pitching because I went to about five three-ball counts,' said Bobrow. 'Illinois did make some contact, but fortunately, our defense played strong behind me.'
Pamanian finished with a career-high five RBI's on 2-for-3 hitting. Morley went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Scott drove in two runs.
'It was nice to see that our pitchers were able to complete their games this weekend,' said coach Diane Ninemire. 'The defense played well behind them. We executed our offense really well today and we hope to keep the numbers up and keep the pressure on our opponents.'
