No. 2 Softball Edges No. 13 Fresno State 1-0 In Eight Innings
Feb. 24, 2002
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Despite scoring only one run for the third time in its last four games, No. 2 Stanford (13-2) received a strong pitching effort and just enough offense to squeak past No. 13 Fresno State 1-0 in eight innings in Sunday afternoon's Gold Bracket consolation championship game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Cardinal was awarded third place in the Gold Bracket with the victory.
Sunday's battle against Fresno State (10-5) was a classic pitcher's duel, with Cardinal starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, Calif.) and Bulldog hurler Jamie Southern matching zeroes for the first seven innings. There were just four hits in the game combined by both schools, two for each squad.
Stanford pushed the winning run across in the top of the eighth, as pinch runner Jessica Draemel (Omaha, Neb.) came around to score when Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, Calif.) fly ball to center was dropped by Bulldog outfielder Tiffany Whipple for the only run of the game. Junior Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, Calif.) had both hits for the Cardinal, finishing 2-3 on the day with a stolen base.
Nyberg improved to 8-1 with the win, allowing just the two hits while walking none and striking out six in eight innings. Fresno State's Southern was also solid on the mound, allowing the one run and striking out 10 in a complete game effort.
Stanford competes at the Red Desert Classic next weekend in St. George, Utah.
Box Score will be posted later this evening.
