Feb. 24, 2002
COLUMBUS, Ga. - In its first meeting with a fellow Pac-10 school, the Washington softball team fell to Oregon State 3-0 Sunday in final day action of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 16-6 overall and finished tournament play with a 2-3 record.
Oregon State scored its first run in the bottom of the third as Beaver pinch runner Miranda Dellinger came home on a two-out single by freshman Loni Mendoza.
The Beavers increased their lead by two more in the fourth, when catcher Traci Feldt slapped her second hit of the game to right field also with two outs.
The Husky offense, meanwhile struggled all game long, managing just a pair of hits - a lead-off single by freshman Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.) and another single by junior shortstop Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) in the top of the seventh. The only other UW player to reach base was designated player Nicole Wicks (Renton, Wash.), who made it to first on a Beaver fielding error.
UW freshman pitcher Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) took the loss to fall to 5-2 in 2002, while Beaver pitchers Kristen Hunter and Monica Hoffman combined for 13 strikeouts and the shutout.
The Huskies continue their early season tournament schedule with a trip to St. George, Utah, for the Red Desert Classic, March 1-3.
