Richie, Pitching Key Beaver Win

Feb. 24, 2002

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Paul Richie's two-run double in the seventh inning put Oregon State ahead for good as the Beavers took a 9-6 win over San Francisco in the Riverside Baseball Invitational on Sunday afternoon. OSU (5-6 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) finished second in the four-team event, the Beavers wrap up their trip with a non-league game against Michigan on Monday at 1 p.m.

Oregon State had a season-high 18 hits - including five doubles and two triples - in the four-hour, two-minute contest. OSU scored in eight of the nine innings against the Dons (3-9, 0-0 Big West).

The Beavers backed that with strong pitching performances from Mark McLemore, Mike Ekstrom and Jared Sanders for their second win in the three-game tournament. Ekstrom, a freshman righthander, earned his first collegiate win and Sanders picked up his second save of the season.

'All three of them were good today,' said Richie, who caught the lengthy affair for OSU.

McLemore, making his first start of the season, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and had faced just one batter over the minimum at that point. In the fifth, he struck out the first hitter he faced before an error, a pair of infield singles, a single to center, a walk and a hit batter spelled his undoing in one of the finest performances of the junior lefthander's career.

'Mark did a good job of getting ahead in the count and he just pounded the strike zone,' Richie said of McLemore. 'He threw his curve for strikes and they just kind of waved at it, and he got a lot of ground balls.'

Ekstrom came in and gave up a run-scoring single to Joe Jacobitz that tied the game, the wild pitched home the go-ahead run before escaping the inning. After settling in, he allowed just one more run in his 2 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out one.

'Mike kept the ball down and let his movement help him,' Richie said. 'He was throwing his curve for strikes and he kept them off-balance.'

The Beavers tied the game 5-5 on Seth Pietsch's triple and run-scoring groundout in the sixth inning. In the seventh, OSU loaded the bases with one out for Richie, on a one-ball, two-strike count he sharply grounded the ball just inside first base to drive in two runs and give Oregon State a 7-5 lead.

'He was pitching me outside,' Richie said. 'I'd seen his curve two pitches earlier and I knew I'd get it in that count. I just wanted to hit it hard the other way, to put two hands through the ball.'

The Beavers turned the game over to closer Sanders with two out in the seventh, and he allowed just one hit and one walk in finishing the game.

'Jared was real aggressive,' Richie said. 'He wanted to get ahead and he threw his breaking ball for strikes. He wanted to close the deal.'

The win was a boost for the Beavers after their loss to California-Riverside on Saturday night.

'It was really good for our pitching staff - and for our offense, too - to come out and compete again,' said Richie, who drove in a third run with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.

Chris Biles had a pair of singles, extending his hitting streak to 16 games over two seasons, as every Beaver starter had at least one hit. Tom Creighton went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in for OSU, moving his hitting streak to eight games, while Seth Pietsch had a double and a triple among his three hits and Will Hudson also doubled and tripled.
