WSU Tennis Beats No. 59 Oregon 6-1

Lewiston, Idaho--- The No. 29 WSU women's tennis team won its second straight competition against a ranked opponent by defeating the No. 59 Oregon Ducks 6-1 Sunday.

The win improved the Cougars to 2-2 this season, while the Ducks dropped to 6-4 overall.

The Cougars dominated the doubles competition by winning all three matches and the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, WSU's No. 11 tandem of Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna earned an 8-2 victory over Oregon's Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle. Cougars Lorena Arias and Orsolya Sallai won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Chris Martinez and Zofia Fodor won 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.

The Cougars won five out of six singles matches. Perkins, ranked 67th nationally, beat Oregon's Janice Nyland 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position. McKenna, ranked 34th by the ITA, posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mendiburu.

Sophomore Arias earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3 over Vickie Gunnarsson.

Freshmen Martinez won at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ester Bak. Fellow freshman Nora Gaal won her No. 6 match up with Adeline Arnaud 6-3, 6-0.

The Cougars return to action Sunday against Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
