Cougs Down Kentucky, Pepperdine
Feb. 25, 2002
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- - Washington State put together two solid team efforts in sweeping Kentucky and Pepperdine in the Texas A&M Continental Express Classic Monday.
In game one, the Cougars rallied by scoring two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to defeat Kentucky (3-5) in eight innings, 9-8.
In game two, starter Brandon Hundt (2-0) pitched a complete game for the Cougars (7-5), going seven innings and allowing four hits and two runs to pick-up his second win of the day, 4-2, against Pepperdine (7-9). Hundt also notched the win against Kentucky pitching in relief.
'He gets the win in the first game and comes back with a complete game,' Mooney said. 'It was really a great effort.'
In the first game, Nick Kenyon pitched five innings of solid relief in place of starter Bryce Chamberlin, allowing one run on seven hits. Hundt then pitched 1/3 of an inning to get his first win of the season.
The Cougars trailed 7-3 after three innings against Kentucky, before their late-game heroics. WSU trailed 2-0, before Derek Bruce scored on a fielder's choice in the second inning to cut the Cougar deficit to 2-1. Kentucky tacked on five runs on the top of the third, but WSU answered in its half of the inning, when Bookie Gates, who was five-for-five at the plate, tripled to score Justin Hart. Gates then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff LaRue.
Kentucky added another run in the fifth, but WSU rebounded in the fifth and sixth innings. Bruce scored Gates on a single in the fifth, while in the sixth, Hart singled to bring home Brandon Reddinger and Gates tripled to plate Hart.
Collin Henderson continued the rally in the seventh, when his single scored Billy Hetherington and Steve Mortimer to tie the score at eight. In the eighth, Gates, doubled to plate Hart from first base giving WSU a sweep against Kentucky at the tournament.
'It was a good team performance today,' WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. 'We battled back and just kept playing hard. We believed we could win this whole thing, we're a little greedy.'
In the second game, Hundt was the story. The junior was in full command throughout the game, striking out five and walking just one batter.
WSU made another rally against the Waves. Trailing 2-1 after five, the Cougars scored two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for the win.
WSU took an early 1-0 lead in the second when Grant Richardson scored on a fielder's choice. The Waves answered with a run in the third and another in the fifth. WSU responded in the sixth. LaRue doubled to score Gates from first base and Mortimer singled home LaRue for a 3-2 WSU lead. The Cougars added another run in the seventh when Mike Andrusco scored on a passed ball.
Next up for WSU is Troy State at 4 p.m. Friday at the opening day of the Troy State Wiregrass Classic at Wiregrass Stadium in Dothan, Ala. The Cougars will meet Kent State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Kansas State at 10 a.m. Sunday.
