Feb. 26, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford University (9-1) won its second non-conference home match in as many days by blanking unranked Santa Clara University (3-4) on Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal defeated unranked Utah 6-1 on Monday.
Stanford won all six singles matches in straight sets in its first dual against the Broncos since 1985.
The Cardinal, which gave top-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/international Academy) the afternoon off, shuffled the top of its lineup with great success. In his first career start at No. 1 singles, 16th-raked junior David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) defeated Bronco freshman Chris Lam (Honolulu, HI) 7-6, 6-2. In just his second career appearance at No. 2, 37th-ranked junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS) defeated sophomore Michael Duong (Sunnyvale, CA/Los Altos HS) 6-4, 6-3.
Stanford also won all three doubles matches, highlighted by second-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and Martin posting an 8-2 win over Michael Bruggemann and Lam at No. 1 doubles.
The Cardinal hits the road this weekend to compete in the prestigious Pacific Coast Doubles Championships on Friday-Sunday in La Jolla, California.
Stanford's next home match is against 47th-ranked Arizona (6-3) on Friday, March 8 at the Taube Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
