SERIES RECORD: Cal will be facing North Carolina in baseball for the first time in school history...

HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Esquer, 36, is in his third season at Cal and has a career record of 68-59 (.535)...he became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (9-6) has won its last five games, including sweeping Boston College Feb. 22-24 at Evans Diamond (10-4, 7-4, 16-0) and defeating Centenary, 9-8 in 10 innings Tuesday...sophomore outfielder Brian Horwitz had the game-winning RBI in the victory over the Gents...the Bears, bolstered by two home runs by sophomore first baseman Conor Jackson and a clutch two-out single by pinch hitter Chris Grossman in the bottom of the ninth inning, came back from a 8-3 deficit by scoring two runs in the eighth inning and three runs in the ninth against Centenary...Jackson is continuing an outstanding 2002 season as he has hit safely in all 15 games this season and is currently batting .476 with four doubles, two triples, six home runs and 20 RBI...earlier this year, Jackson hit a home run in three consecutive games, including his first collegiate grand slam Feb. 8 versus Gonzaga...on the mound, the Bears are led by senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson, a third team Preseason All-American in Baseball America...in four starts this season, Hutchinson is 3-1 with an 2.81 ERA and has a team-high 32.0 innings pitch with a team-best 32 strikeouts...he currently has 222 career strikeouts, fifth on Cal's all-time career list and is 54 strikeouts away from being the school's all-time strikeout leader, surpassing Doug Weiss' 275 strikeouts from 1955-57...in the Bears Feb. 24 16-0 shutout of Boston College, four Cal pitchers limited the Eagles to one hit...freshman right-hander Brent Hale picked up his first collegiate win, pitching 6.0 innings with one hit, no runs, three walks and three strikeouts....senior Ryan Atkinson, sophomore Blake Read and senior Arthur Gross also threw for the Bears...
