Barden Joins Top 10s In Hits, Homers

March 1, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden moved into Oregon State's all-time top 10s for career hits and home runs and Ty Kline retired the final 10 Gonzaga hitters as the Beavers took an 11-9 win in non-league baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The win in the home-opener was the third straight victory for OSU (7-6 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10).

Barden's 19th career homer, a two-run shot to left-centerfield in the first inning, tied him with Ken Bowen (1984-87) for 10th place on OSU's all-time list. When he added a single in the seventh inning, it gave him 10th place on OSU's list of all-time hit leaders with 170, one ahead of Mickey Riley (1980-83) and Bryan Ganter (1984-87).

A sun-drenched throng of nearly 900 - OSU's biggest crowd for a home-opener in over 15 years - saw the Beavers improve their all-time Opening Day record at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field to 75-18.

'It was really nice to be at home, and we had a great crowd,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team had spent the first four weekends of the season on the road. 'We made it a little closer than we wanted, but Gonzaga played well.'

The Beavers jumped in front 8-2 with a six-run fifth inning, only to see the Bulldogs score seven in the top of the sixth. That outburst was capped by GU designated hitter Kevin Richardson's grand slam off Kline, Richardson was the first hitter Kline faced.

'It was more important to me how Ty came back and pitched after that than the mistake he made,' Casey said of the junior righthander, who now has a 1.72 earned run average in his 15 1/3 innings of work. The next hitter, Nate Gold, had homered earlier in the game but Kline got him to pop up to end the seven-run inning.

'I didn't worry about it too much,' Kline said of the grand slam. 'The guys have been hitting well and fielding well behind me. Yeah, it hurt when it went out, but I knew the guys would play well behind me.'

Oregon State, which played errorless defense, took advantage of Gonzaga miscues to regain the lead.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Chris Biles reached base on an error and took second on a wild pitch, he then scored the tying run when Wick Udy doubled down the rightfield line. In the eighth, the Beavers picked up two unearned runs on a walk and a pair of Bulldog errors.

That got Kline off the hook, and he didn't let a Beaver lead slip away a second time.

'It's like coach (Gary Henderson, OSU's pitching coach) says - you get your balance, and things will work out pretty well,' Kline said. 'I just found my rhythm.'

Finally playing at home didn't hurt, either.

'It makes you feel real good,' Kline said. 'You come out here and there's a big turnout, people cheering for you - it gets people really pumped. We had a lot of fun.'

Second baseman Kerisi Reynolds was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Beavers, over the last two games, he's 6-for-9 with seven runs batted in. Barden, Biles and Udy had two hits each while Tom Creighton extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Barden's home run Friday gave him homers in both OSU's season-opener and the Beavers' home-opener this season. His two RBIs also gave him eighth place on the Beavers' all-time list in that category, with his 116 pushing him in front of Drew Hedges (1998-2001).
