California Blasts San Diego State
March 1, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California women's tennis team returned to high form today against the visiting San Diego State Aztecs, defeating them by a score of 6-1, which included a sweep on all three doubles courts. With the win, the Bears improve to 6-1, while the Aztecs drop to 5-3.
Cal's duo of Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs, recently promoted to the second doubles court, keyed the opening round victories with an 8-5 win, which gave the Bears the momentum heading into the latter part of the afternoon. Jacobs, who played on the second singles court as well, got down early in the going. Down 1-4 in the first set, Jacobs rallied to split the remaining games, and then breezed through the last two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Fusano was equally impressive on court no. 3, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
After Cal had sealed the victory with Jacobs' win, and with the Bears leading 5-1, sophomore Raquel Kops-Jones found herself in a battle with Aztec Sylvia Tornier. Like Jacobs', Kops-Jones ran into some trouble early, losing her first set 5-7. After rallying to win the second 6-3, Kops-Jones and Tornier traded rallies and games in the third set to find themselves in a tiebreaker as the sun set behind the courts. Kops-Jones won the first three, lost the second three, and battled back and fourth, eventually coming away with Cal's sixth point of the day, and winning the set 7-6 (8-6).
Cal's back in action tomorrow at Hellman, when they take on the Ducks of Oregon. Match time is set for noon.
