Pac-10 Swimming - Day 1 Final Results

After the first day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships, held in Long Beach, CA, the Bruins are in fifth place with 259 points. Stanford is in first place with 442 points, followed by Cal (366), USC (365.5), Arizona (297), UCLA, Arizona State (228), Washington (132.5), Washington State (129) and Oregon State (97). After the first day of the diving competition, the Bruins are in third place (61) behind Stanford (134) and USC (85). Arizona State is fourth (35), followed by Arizona (29) and Cal (18).
Finals were held Thursday night in the 200 Free relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 400 Medley relay. UCLA's 200 Free relay team of Sara Platzer, LeAnne Cadag, Erica Shugart and Malin Svahnstrom placed fourth (1:31.86). The top-three teams were Cal (1:30.47 - meet record), Stanford (1:30.96) and Arizona (1:31.77). The Bruin team of Jeannette Nieto, Lindsey Buck, Chelsea Murray and Katie Younglove finished in 1:39.57 in exhibition.
In the finals of the 500 Free, Jackie Lobdell placed 11th (4:49.30) and Melissa Miller was 19th (4:54.06). In the 200 IM, Svahnstrom was fourth (1:59.89). Stanford's Shelly Ripple won the 200 IM in 1:56.64, a new meet record. USC's Michala Kwasny and Kristin MacGregor took second and third, respectively, in 1:59.11 and 1:59.58. Other Bruins in the 200 IM were Jen Noddle (12th, 2:03.16), Cathy Coler (13th, 2:03.19), Brooke Winkler (2:03.30), Stacy Kearney (20th, 2:03.64), Leslie Hovsepian (21st (2:04.36) and Katie Winkelhaus (22nd, 2:04.87).
In the 50 Free, Platzer finished second (22.87) behind Stanford's Lacey Boutwell (22.73). Shugart finished 12th (23.56) and Cadag was 23rd (24.26). The 400 Medley relay team of Naoko Watanabe, Elvira Fischer, Kristen Lewis and Svahnstrom was disqualified and the team of Murray, Dahl, Buck and Beth Boehm swam an unofficial 3:55.06.
Events will continue tomorrow, March 1. Preliminaries begin at 11 AM and Finals will begin at 6 PM. The championships will conclude Saturday, March 3. For complete results, please go to www.pac-10.org.
