Southern Miss Bats On Fire As Eagles Top Long Beach State

TUCSON--Southern Mississippi used a 14-hit attack to slip past Long BeachState, 5-2, and even its record at 7-7, in Friday afternoon play inArizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.
Southern Miss got on the scoreboard in the first at-bat as Amanda Brownhomered to left. The number two hitter, Melanie Hymel doubled toleft-center and two outs later Heather Bell doubled to make it 2-0.
Long Beach State (15-7) used doubles by Natalie Walker and Arleigh Thorpto score a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Eagles cameright back with a home run by Melanie Hymel to make it 3-1.
Natalie Walker singled in a run for LBSU in the bottom of the third tomake it 3-2, but Heather Bell's leadoff home run for Southern Miss tostraightaway center pushed the lead back to two, 4-2, in the sixth. TheEagles added another run when Kenya Peters followed an Amanda Brown doublewith a run-scoring single.
