Arizona Track & Field Began Season at Bill Sawyer Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Bill Sawyer Invitational on Saturday to begin the 2002 outdoor season. In a non-scoring meet, the Wildcats had seven Pac-10 qualifiers and one NCAA provisional qualifier.
The Arizona women took to the competition looking for a strong start for the outdoor season. They accounted for three of the Pac-10 qualifiers and the one NCAA provisional qualifier for the Wildcats. The Wildcat men produced the other four Pac-10 qualifiers.
In women's sprinting action, Amanda Underwood placed 11th in the 200m with a time of 26.70. Komnos also placed second in the 100m high hurdles in 13.79, which was good enough to qualify for the Pac-10 Championships. Also, in the 100m high hurdles, Chelsea Powell ran a 15.20 to place fifth. In the 400m intermediate hurdles, Powell was second in 1:02.48. Joining Powell in the 400m hurdles were Lindsay Scarborough and Gina Mazzone. Scarborough was fourth with a time of 1:07.58, while Mazzone was fifth in 1:10.15.
The Wildcats had several strong showings in the middle and long distance races. Danielle Price led the way for the Wildcats in the 800m with a first-place finish in a time of 2:14.42. Also in the 800m, Beth Hoge was third in 2:17.22 and Jennalyn Rasch was sixth in 2:32.47. In the 1500m, Cara Cline was third with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 4:38.98. Cline was followed by Abby Peters (sixth, 4:42.46), Jennifer Burris (seventh, 4:47.10) and Robin Tierney (11th, 4:54.99). Kim Bates placed second in the 3,000m with a time of 10:15.99. Andrea Schwartz finished in second place in the 2,000m steeplechase and a time of 7:35.65.
In the field events, Underwood finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 4-9 ï¿½. The Wildcats swept the pole vaults top three places. Phyllis Brown was fifth with a height of 11-10 ï¿½. Sarah Jacobs followed in second with a finishing height of 11-6 ï¿½. Whitney Schauer was third with a final height of 11-2 ï¿½. In the throwing events, Angela Foster finished fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 144-6 ï¿½. In the hammer throw, Foster provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish and a throw of 189-0 ï¿½. Julie De Marni was first in the javelin with a final mark of 139-9.
In the men's sprint events, Steve Pelligreen finished ninth in the 100m with a time of 10.95. Pelligreen was 12th in the 200m with a finishing time of 22.79. Jeff Hunter qualified for the Pac-10 Championships in both the 100m high hurdles and the 400m intermediate hurdles. He won both events with times of 14.27 (100m hurdles) and 52.42 (400m hurdles). Mike Thomas was seventh in the 100m hurdles finishing in 15.73.
In the men's distance races, Tom Prindiville was second in the 1,500m finishing in 4:05.3 Following Prindiville were Wade Juntunen (fifth, 4:10.5), Kevin Engelhardt (seventh, 4:14.4) and Matt McInvale (eighth, 4:15.1). Aaron Powell led the way for the Wildcats in the 800m with a second-place finish and a time of 1:57.43. Also in the 800m, Thomas Opio finished fourth in 1:58.28. In the 3,000m, Eric Bohn finished in eighth place with a time of 8:50.00. Mark Anderson was victorious in the 2,000m steeplechase with a finishing time of 6:07.17. Josh Ludwig finished third in the same event with a time of 6:18.13.
In the field events, Peter Fabian was fourth in the high jump finishing at 6-3. Mike Mortensen won the pole vault competition with a final height of 15-6. In the long jump, Mark Ramos finished fourth with a leap of 22-2. Chad Martin was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 20-7 ï¿½. Ryan Moore finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 145-0 ï¿½. The Wildcats had three athletes in the hammer throw led by Richard Legarra's first-place finish and a Pac-10 qualifying throw of 194-6. Moore was third finishing with a best throw of 179-5, while Scott Sharper was fifth and a mark of 163-7 ï¿½. In the javelin throw, Matt Wagner won the competition with a Pac-10 qualifying throw of 209-10 ï¿½. Jared Morell finished fifth with a throw of 175-3 ï¿½, while Mike Thomas finished seventh at 155-6 ï¿½.
The Wildcats' next outdoor meet will be March 15-16 as they play host at the Willie Williams Invitational. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held Friday, March 8 - Saturday, March 9 at the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville. Several Wildcats will be there seeking to repeat or improve upon last year's third-place finish.
