Julien Kapek Breaks USC Triple Jump Record At Trojan Invitational
March 2, 2002
Sophomore Julien Kapek, a mid-year transfer from Houilles, France, triple-jumped a school-record 55-2 3/4 to higlight the Trojan Invitational held on Saturday, Mar. 2, at Katherine B. Loker Stadium on the campus of USC.
Kapek, competing in only his second meet as a Trojan, shattered Tom Cochee's record of 54-4 1/2 that had stood since 1975. The mark is also fourth on the all-time Pac-10 list and an automatic qualifier for the 2002 NCAA Championships to be held in Baton Rouge, LA., on May 29-June 1.
The defending NCAA champion Women of Troy showed why they have one of the finest throws corps in the country as three USC athletes picked up NCAA automatic qualifying marks on the day, including junior All-American hammer thrower Julianna Tudja who threw 204-5, sophomore L'Orangerie Crawford, who threw a personal-best 202-5 (third on the all-time USC hammer list) and senior All-American Cynthia Ademiluyi, who threw 53-10 1/2 in the shot.
The Women of Troy also tallied some NCAA provisional marks: Junior Amy Thiel in the hammer (187-2), sophomore NCAA champ Inga Stasiulionyte in the javelin (161-1), junior Cerenity Young in the shot (PR 49-5), Crawford in the shot (52-3 3/4), senior All-American Tatyana Obukhova in the triple jump (42-7 1/2w), freshman Melissa Astete in the pole vault (12-6) and Ademiluyi in the discus (170-0).
In the running events, the Women of Troy got wins from junior Danielle Morrell in the 1500m (4:39.07, Pac-10 qualifier) and junior Nakiya Johnson in the 400m (54.30, Pac-10 qualifier).
In the men's hammer, sophomore Michael Murray threw a PR 196-3, just shy of an NCAA provisional mark, while sophomore Harrison Lee also picked up a PR with a throw of 187-7. Freshman javelin thrower Dennis Rice, competing unattached, threw 214-1, good for third on the all-time USC javelin chart.
In the running events, the USC men got Pac-10 qualifying marks from sophomore Brandon Matlock in the 400m (47.48), freshman Wes Felix in the 100m (10.65) and freshman Jeff Garrison in the 400m IH (52.42).
On Mar. 17, the Trojan men host defending national champion Tennessee, while the Women of Troy host San Diego State and UNLV.
