March 3, 2002

FULLERTON, Calif. - -

Clare Burnum tied an Oregon State school record with two triples on Sunday afternoon to lead the No. 11 OSU softball team to a 5-0 win over San Jose State in its final game at the CS-Fullerton Worth Tournament.

Burnum, who tied Andrea Talcott's 1993 record with two triples in a game, now has five in her career at Oregon State and leads the Beavers (19-7) with a .368 batting average this year. The junior was 2-for-4 on the day with two runs.

Sophomore Monica Hoffman pitched the first four innings to earn the win and improve to 6-2 on the year before Kristen Hunter came on in relief in the fifth.

Alana Mendoza, a freshman utility player who has seen increased playing time of late, finished the game 3-for-4, including a RBI double in the first, and now has five hits in her last seven at bats. Jessica King went 2-for-3, giving the Beavers three players with multiple hits in the game.

'Monica and Kristen combined to keep San Jose State's offense at bay,' OSU coach Kirk Walker said. 'We got out and jumped on them early with a triple and a double, so it was nice to get the offense going and keep it up throughout the game.'

The Beavers finished the tournament with a 3-3 mark.

Oregon State travels to Hawaii for the University of Hawaii Malihini Tournament March 7-10. The Beavers will play Loyola Marymount, New Mexico State and Hawaii before beginning bracket play.
