Cardinal Duo Falls In Final of Pacific Coast Doubles

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Stanford University's Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) fell in the championship match of the 113th Pacific Coast Doubles on Sunday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The Pacific Coast Doubles is a 64-team event that is open to both collegiate and open competitors.
Lipsky and Martin, who were the third-seeded collegiate team in the draw, opened the final day of the tournament with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 semifinal victory over unseeded Teige Sullivan and Ruben Torres of USC.
The Cardinal tandem then faced its second USC opponent of the day in the final as it took on the second-seeded collegiate team of Ryan Moore and Nicholas Rainey. The Trojan duo defeated Lipsky and Martin 6-3, 6-4 to capture the tournament championship.
Stanford's other two entrants in the competition - Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS)/K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) and Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks HS)/Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) - both reeled off three consecutive victories before being eliminated in Saturday's quarterfinals.
The third-ranked Cardinal (9-1) returns to team competition when it hosts No. 47 Arizona (6-4) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center.
