Four Stanford Wrestlers Earn NCAA Bids

Corvallis, Ore. --- The Cardinal qualified four wrestlers for the NCAA Championships today at the Pac-10 Championships. Stanford finished seventh with 50.5 team points. The top four finishers in each weight class plus three wildcards will head to Albany, NY on March 21-23 for the NCAA Championships.

In Session III this morning, sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) finished third at 125 pounds. He started the morning with a 6-3 win over second-seeded Mike Simpson (ASU) to advance to the third-place match where he then handed Oregon State's Michael Delaney a 12-2 major decision. Peterson went 5-1 this weekend, giving him 24 wins on the season.

Freshman Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) claimed fourth place at 141 pounds. He took a 5-3 (TB) decision over Ryan Meloche (CSUB) to advance to the third place final, where he dropped a 9-3 decision to second-seeded Cedric Haymon (CP).

Senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside) also finished in fourth place. He posted a 4-1 decision over the No. 1 seed Rocky Smart (ASU) at 157 to advance to the third place final. Weikel-Magden was then pinned by Boise State's Mitch Morgan at 4:21.

In Session IV this evening, freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) finished in second place, falling to the No. 1 seed Collin Robertson of Boise State. Robertson pinned Gentry at 4:53. Gentry posted a 2-1 record on the weekend and earned his 34th win of the season. Gentry's 34 wins extends the all-time school record for victories by a freshman.

The wildcard spots have been awarded to Jason Harless at 133 (Oregon), Gabe Vigil at 141 (Boise State) and Rocky Smart at 157 (Arizona State).

The NCAA Championships will held on Thursday, March 21 through Saturday, March 23 in Albany, NY. For more information on the national championships, please refer to the official site at www.ncaachampionships.com.
