No. 12 Softball Finishes Red Desert Classic With A 15-5 Win Over UC Santa Barbara
March 3, 2002
St. GEORGE, Utah - The 12th-ranked Washington softball team used a nine-run fourth inning to crush UC Santa Barbara, 15-5 (5 inn.) Saturday in the final game of the Red Desert Classic. With the win, the Huskies improved to 20-7 overall and finished 4-1 in tournament play.
The UW scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, beginning with a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first when UW junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) hit the first of her two home runs in the game to also score sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.).
The Gauchos responded back with two runs in their half of the first when third baseman Katie Oliver belted a two-out double with the bases loaded.
After the Huskies added a run in the second to take a 3-2 lead, the UW pushed across three more in the third when freshman Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.) singled and Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.) doubled with the bases loaded.
Just as Washington looked to have a comfortable 6-2 lead, UCSB did not give up, capitalizing on two Husky fielding errors to get within two at 6-4 when centerfielder Leslie Simien came home on a pick-off attempt at second base and shortstop Julia Tamai scored on a sacrifice fly.
The UW then erupted for nine runs on five hits in the top of the fourth. Freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.), sophomores Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) and Roach and senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) all recorded RBI in the inning, which was capped by Clark's second home run of the game - a three-run shot and her fifth, four-bagger of the tournament.
All three Husky pitchers saw action in the game, as freshman Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) earned the win to move to 8-1 overall, before giving way to Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) in the fourth, who was then relieved by freshman Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) in the fifth.
UCSB pitcher Katie Junge took the loss, as the Gauchos fell to 10-16 in 2002.
Washington returns to Seattle for its first home games of the season, March 9, versus non-conference opponent Simon Fraser at 1 p.m. at the Husky Softball Stadium.
