No. 3 Softball Takes Down Utah 4-2 At Red Desert Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah - No. 3 Stanford concluded its weekend at the Red Desert Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over host Utah in St. George, Utah. The Cardinal, which has won seven straight, was crowned tournament champions after finishing 5-0 on the weekend and improve to 14-0 overall in program history at the Red Desert Classic.
Stanford (18-2) broke out to an early lead against the Utes (10-21), scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, Texas) drove in senior Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) with an infield single to open the game and give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, Calif.) then followed with a double off the right center field fence, plating senior Sarah Beeson (Tucson, Ari.) and Allister for a 3-0 edge.
The Cardinal tacked on its fourth run in the second inning courtesy of a Mendoza RBI double to left field which brought home Walker, who reached base via a fielder's choice.
Utah rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as Lindsey Trevis doubled home two runs with two outs and the bases loaded to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-2.
During its five-game weekend stretch, the Cardinal outscored its opponents a combined 43-7 and batted .379 (58-153).
Cardinal starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, Calif.) worked her ninth complete game of the season to improve her record to 11-1 overall. Nyberg limited Utah to seven hits while striking out four and walking two.
The Cardinal will host Baylor on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium, while playing under the lights for the first time in program history. After its matchup with the Bears, Stanford embarks on its final preseason tournament destination as it heads to Tampa for the Speedline Invitational beginning Thursday, March 7.
