Utah Takes Series With 8-3 Win

SEATTLE - Utah's Mitch Maio, making his first start after seven relief appearances, threw a complete game to lead theUtes to an 8-3 win over the Washington baseball team Sunday at Husky Ballpark as Utah won the three-game, non-conference series, two games to one.
Washington fell to 6-5 with the loss while Utah improved to 10-8.
Maio (3-0) allowed nine hits and three runs over nine innings while striking out 11 Huskies. UW starterSean White (1-1) surrendered, a junior from Mercer Island, 14 hits and eight runs (five earned) over sixand two-thirds innings to suffer the loss.
Utah scored single runs -- both unearned thanks to UW errors -- in the second and third innings beforegoing ahead 4-0 on back-to-back RBI singles from Nate Weese and Brit Pannier. The Huskies closed to 4-3 in the fourth when Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) doubled to drive in one and freshman Kyle Larsen(Redmond/Eastlake) hit his second home run in as many days.
However, the Utes scored one in the sixth and put it away in the seventh on a run-scoring double fromBrett Baldwin and a two-RBI single from Adam Castleton.
Husky shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty), who has hit safely in all 11 games this year, extendedhis hitting streak to 11 games, going 3-for-5 for the second straight day. Johnson added two doubles inthree at bats for the Huskies.
Five Utah batters had multiple hits, led by a 3-for-3 outing from left fielder Donnie Saba.
The Huskies travel to face Portland Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. before returning to Husky Ballpark next Fridaythrough Sunday for a three-game series vs. UC Riverside.
