Cougars, White Hot At Coastal Carolina Invitational
March 4, 2002
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- Fighting off cold temperatures and windy conditions, Washington State junior Dustin White fired a 68 to lead the Cougars to first place in the 17-team field at the Coastal Carolina Invitational Monday.
WSU holds a one-stroke advantage over second place Texas A&M after a first round 289. The second 18 holes scheduled for Monday will be played Tuesday afternoon due to poor weather.
White's 68 left him in a tie for individual medalist honors with Stephen Reed of Texas A&M. White and Reed have a three-stroke cushion over a quintet of players in third place with 71's.
Cougar sophomore Isaac Woods is tied with three others in eighth place with a 72, while senior Jon Reehoorn will fight it out to stay in the top 20 Tuesday after a two-over par 74, good for 18th place.
Tournament host Coastal Carolina is tied for third with Furman and Vanderbilt at 299, 10 strokes off the lead pace. The Cougars Palouse rival, Idaho, also made the cross-country trip, carding a 309 and ending the first day in a tie with Southern Mississippi in 13th place.
The Cougars will be looking for their third tournament victory of the season when play beings at 8 a.m. EST Tuesday.
