Men's Soccer Downs LMU, 3-0, In Spring Opener
March 4, 2002
Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team opened its 2002 spring season with a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Mar. 2.
The Bruins controlled play for most of the contest, scoring two first half goals. Midfielder Ryan Futagaki scored what proved to be the game-winner on a penalty kick after midfielder Jimmy Frazelle was taken down in the box. Frazelle scored the Bruins' second goal of the half, putting in an Adolfo Gregorio cross. A Gregorio pass to forward Tim Pierce set up UCLA's final goal in the second half.
Zach Wells earned the shutout despite the Bruins playing a man down for the last 20 minutes of the game.
'It was a really good game for us, especially considering it was our first of the spring,' said UCLA assistant coach Jorge Salcedo. 'Knowing that LMU had played previous games this spring and were sharp, we were anticipating a good game. I thought our team prepared themselves well and played an excellent game.'
In the second game of the doubleheader Saturday, UCLA and Cal State Fullerton played to a 1-1 tie. Forward Matt Taylor scored UCLA's lone goal in the first half.
The Bruins will next take on the U.S. Under-18 National Team on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 am.
