Women's Golf Stands 12th After First Round of San Jose State Spartan Invitational

SALINAS, Calif. - Freshman Johnna Nealy shot a career-low 73 and tied for ninth in the first round of the Spartan Invitational played at the 5,938-yard, par-72 Corral de Tierra Country Club. Nealy topped her previous low by three strokes and leads the Ducks at plus-1.

Oregon placed 12th of 16 teams after carding a 308 composite. California led the competition by five strokes after one round with a 289, followed by Pepperdine at 294 and Oklahoma State at 297.

California's Ria Quiazon took the first round lead with a 4-under 68, while fellow Bear Anna Temple tied for second three strokes behind Quiazon at 71 along with South Carolina's Kristy McPherson and Southern California's Becky Lucidi.

Second round action begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
