Baseball Falls 5-3 at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Chris Miller and Jaime Martinez hit back-to-back RBI singles as part of a four-run fifth Tuesday and the UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the USC Trojans, 5-3, at Anteater Ballpark. It was the first-ever meeting between UCI head coach John Savage and USC head coach Mike Gillespie. Savage served as an assistant coach under Gillespie at USC.
UCI improves to 12-10 on the season while USC falls to 6-8 overall. The Trojans have lost three straight games.
The first five Anteater batters reached base safely in the fifth. B.J. Eucce led off with a walk as Jordan Szabo and Matt Anderson followed with back-to-back singles. All 11 UCI hits were singles.
Miller and Martinez both singled and Effren Trejo singled home Miller to complete the scoring.
Glenn Swanson (4-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Anteaters for the win, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Josh Rummonds (0-1) took the loss for the Trojans as a last-minute starter, going four innings and allowing four runs on a hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
USC took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth after designated hitter Alberto Concepcion hit his second home run of the season with a solo shot to left.
UCI's Keith Raulinaitis and Jimmy Alstot combined to retire the last nine Trojan batters to protect the win as Alstot recorded the save, his first of the season, with a perfect inning in the ninth.
The Trojans travel to Round Rock, Tx., this weekend for the Express College Classic at Dell Diamond. USC will play TCU on Friday (March 8) at 7 p.m. Central time, No. 12 Notre Dame on Saturday (March 9) at 3 p.m., and Creighton on Sunday (March 10) at 10 a.m. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
