SALINAS, Calif. - -
Oregon State junior Stacie Ferguson shot a 76 in the second round of the San Jose State Spartan Invitational on Tuesday to lead the women's golf team.
After two rounds, OSU is in 13th with a score of 624 after shooting 312 in each round. Teams will play the final 18 holes Wednesday morning at the par-72, 5,938-yard Corral de Tierra Country Club.
Ferguson, who opened with a 75 Monday, is among four players tied for 27th at 151.
'She's playing well,' 12th-year OSU coach Rise Lakowske said of Ferguson. 'There were a couple holes that came up and got her where she made double bogey when she hit a bad shot off the tee, but she's been very consistent though.'
Ashlei Pendleton is five shots back of Ferguson at 156 after shooting a 79 Tuesday. She is among three tied for 45th.
Freshman Alex Lucio showed marked improvement over her first round 87 with a 76 Tuesday. She stands at 163.
'It's very frustrating for them, because they are capable of playing so much better, and they know it,' Lakowske said. 'They're on the road to playing a lot better, they just have to think it.'
'This is a good course. The greens have been the most difficult aspect so far - that's where we're having trouble. We're just going to have to come out and pull the trigger tomorrow.'
South Carolina's Kristy McPherson has a three shot lead over USC's Mikaela Parmlid and Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright after totaling a 4-under 140.
California and No. 25 New Mexico State are neck-and-neck for the team crown, with Cal's 589 good for a slim one-stroke lead over the Aggies. Sixteenth-ranked Pepperdine and No. 19 Washington are two shots out of the lead.
