Cal Wins Spartan Invitational By One Stroke

SALINAS, Calif. - No. 17 California held off surges from Pepperdine and Washington Wednesday to win the 21st Spartan Invitational by one shot as the Bears finished the three-day event with an 886 at Corral de Tierra Country Club. The Golden Bears fired a final round of 297 to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time in the program's seven-year history. Last week, Cal won its own Bay Area Classic.

Pepperdine and Washington each shot a 296 on Wednesday but tied for second at 887. Arizona State shot the low round of the day with a 293, which placed them eighth overall with a 900.

Kristy McPherson of South Carolina shot a one-under 71 in the final round to take the individual title with a 5-under 211 for the tournament. Mikaela Parmlid of USC finished second with a three-under 213.

Sophomore Sarah Huarte led Cal, tying for 10th with a 221 after carding a final round of 77. The Bears next highest finisher was senior Anne Walker in a tie for 17th at 223. The low round of the day for Cal came from sophomore Claire Dury, who shot a 71 to tie for 32nd (228).

Cal next competes at the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic March 11-12, in Menefee, Calif.
