No. 1 Stanford Leads Pac-10 Championships After First Day

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fourth-ranked California men's swimming and diving team is in third place with 187 points after the first of three days of competition at the Pac-10 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Top-ranked Stanford leads the six-team field with 251 points, and on the strength of a strong diving performance last week No. 9 Arizona is second at 191.5.
The Bears began the first night of finals on a high note, finishing second in the 200 free relay with the second-fastest time in school history (1:17.72) and the second fastest in the nation this year. Stanford won the relay in 1:17.24, and Arizona was third in 1:18.71.
USC posted a one-two finish in the 500 freestyle with Erik Vendt taking first in 4:16.31 and Klete Keller second in 4:18.65. The Bears top finisher was John Dorr, who placed third in the consolation final in 4:25.45. Dorr clocked his season PR and NCAA consideration time of 4:25.15 in the morning prelims.
Stanford's Dan Trupin won the 200 individual medley in 1:43.83, which was a new Pac-10 and Pac-10 meet record. His teammate Markus Rogan placed second in 1:44.58, followed by Cal's Joe Bruckart in 1:46.05. Bruckart's time was the second fastest in Cal history and an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
Cal Olympian Anthony Ervin was upset in the 50 freestyle, as he took second (19.43) to Arizona's Roland Schoeman (19.36). Ervin's time was an NCAA automatic qualifying time and his fastest of the collegiate season.
In the final event Thursday, Stanford won the 400 medley relay in 3:09.22, which broke the previous Pac-10 meet record of 3:10.50. Also under the previous meet record was Cal, which garnered second place in 3:09.92. As with the 200 free relay, Stanford and Cal are ranked first and second in the nation.
Competition continues tomorrow at 11 a.m. with preliminaries and 6 p.m. with more event finals. The championship wraps up Saturday night.
