No. 14 Softball Rallies For 3-2 Victory Against Loyola Marymount
March 7, 2002
HONOLULU, HI - Brynnen Guthrie's RBI single in the top of the seventh inning helped the No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball squad to a 3-2 victory against Loyola Marymount University in Thursday's opening round game at the Malihini Tournament in Hawai'i.
OSU picked up a single run in the first and third inning to earn a 2-0 lead but LMU rallied to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score.
Guthrie's RBI in the seventh and sophomore hurler Monica Hoffman's success on the mound in the bottom of the inning gave the Beavers their 20th win of the season (20-7).
'This was definitely a good win,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was nice for us to come back in the seventh. Brynnen (Guthrie) came up with a clutch hit, as she's been doing all year.'
Junior Shelly Prochaska finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and belted her fourth double of the year while Guthrie added a 3-for-4 effort and scored a pair of runs.
'We had a few players hit the ball extremely well,' said Walker. 'Shelly Prochaska had a big game and Kelly Petersen was close to hitting a couple of home runs in a couple of crucial situations.'
OSU out-hit the Lions 10-6 and LMU committed three errors in the contest.
'All of our pitchers are getting used to throwing in the humidity,' said Walker. 'From that standpoint it was good for them to all throw today, to be ready for the rest of the weekend.'
The Beavers return to action on Friday with a pair of games. OSU meets New Mexico State at 5 p.m. PST before a 9 p.m. PST contest against tournament host, University of Hawai'i.
