Beavers Rally For 7-5, 10-Inning Baseball Win

March 8, 2002

RENO, Nev. - Two-out, two-run doubles by Kerisi Reynolds and Levi Webber tied the game in the ninth inning and won it in the 10th as Oregon State beat Nevada 7-5 in non-league baseball at Peccole Park. OSU (9-7 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), which has won five of its last six games, had six pitchers combine on a six-hitter.

The Beavers and the Wolfpack (8-9, 0-0 Western Athletic) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 12 noon. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On a cold, clear Friday afternoon, the Beavers had to score three times in the top of the ninth to keep the game alive. There had been doubt the game would be played after a snowstorm hit Reno on Thursday, and the game was played with temperatures in the 40s and snow piled against the base of the outfield fences.

'There were some adverse conditions and we didn't help ourselves in some situations,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'But we came back and got a win on the road, and this one was a good win.'

It was the second time this season the Beavers had rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to tie a game, then won it in 10 innings. They did the same thing against Oral Roberts on Feb. 1 in a 10-9 win.

'This team is really confident,' said Reynolds, who also had a two-out, run-scoring single in the third inning and is batting .550 (11-for-20) with 13 runs batted in over OSU's last five games. 'You can tell that going into the last two or three innings, we think we'll get the job done ... we get excited and in the late innings, we play well. We've got to do that the whole game.'

After Nevada ace righthander Darrell Rasner limited OSU to two runs on two hits in seven-plus innings, the Beavers went to work against lefty reliever Craig Norris in the ninth. J.R. Runyon started the inning with an infield single up the third baseline.

With one out, pinch-hitter Jason McBride took a big swing for strike two against Norris and then hurried to the Beaver dugout, he'd heard something break loose and begin rattling around inside his bat. After finding a different bat, he returned to the plate and dropped a double just inside the rightfield line to put runners at second and third.

Paul Richie then drove a ball off the wall in left for a double, scoring Runyon to make it 5-3, McBride, waiting to see if the ball might be caught, could only reach third. After pinch-hitter Aaron Fausett struck out, it was up to Reynolds, he pulled a two-ball, one-strike pitch in the air to left.

'I saw where he (leftfielder Mike Hass) was playing me in deep left-center, and I knew it had a chance to drop,' Reynolds said. 'I was hoping it would drop, because we needed those runs.'

Hass couldn't catch up to the falling ball, and McBride and Richie scored easily to tie the game. Don Stykel retired the third through fifth hitters in the Wolfpack order in the bottom of the ninth, and OSU went to extra innings for just the second time this season.

With two out and Runyon at first, Seth Pietsch roped a ball down the leftfield line for his 11th double of the season and Runyon advanced to third. That brought up Webber, who had been hitless this season until coming up with a homer and a single in last Sunday's loss to Gonzaga.

'I knew he'd give me a fastball,' Webber said. 'He started me with a curve, and then I was looking pretty much dead red and lifted it up. I put a good swing on it, but I just missed it.'

Webber got enough of the ball, though, to send a line drive into left-centerfield, Hass, playing back toward the line, got a good jump on the ball and made a diving try.

'I thought the guy was going to catch it when he dove,' Webber said. 'But he just couldn't get it.'

Instead, the ball bounded toward the snowbank beneath the 380-foot marker as Runyon and Pietsch scored to put the Beavers in front for good.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Stykel sandwiched an out between a single and a walk, that brought on closer Jared Sanders. He struck out pinch-hitter Curtis Wickwire, walked Chris Dickerson on a full-count pitch to load the bases, and then got .382-hitting Mike Gillies to ground out to second to end the game.

OSU's Brian Barden saw his hitting streak end at 10 games, going 0-for-4. His final plate appearance came in the 10th inning, when he successfully executed a sacrifice bunt.
