March 8, 2002
HONOLULU, HI - The No. 14 ranked Oregon State University softball team took care of New Mexico State, 7-3, in Friday evening's contest at the Malihini Tournament in Hawai'i.
New Mexico State got on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and two stolen bases.
OSU responded with a run in both the second and third inning, followed by a five-run sixth. NMS added 2-run home run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Oregon State finished with eight hits in the contest and capitalized on six Aggie errors.
Junior third baseman Clare Burnum continued her hot-hitting with a 2-for-4 effort from the plate, to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Shelly Prochaska went 2-for-3 and scored a run while freshman Alana Mendoza added a 2-for-3 mark.
'Offensively we did a nice job, especially in the sixth inning,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We swung the bat well and aggressively and took advantage of runners we had on base.'
Hurler Kristen Hunter went the distance on the mound to improve her record to 6-3.
'Kristen (Hunter) did a great job, throwing a complete game,' said Walker. 'She really turned it up and finished strong.'
Oregon State wraps up Friday's competition with a 9 p.m. PST contest against tournament host, University of Hawai'i. OSU has secured at least a No. 2 seed heading into Saturday's bracket play. A victory against the Wahines would give the Beavers the No. 1 seed.
OSU sophomore pitcher Monica Hoffman is expected to start on the mound against Hawai'i.
