Softball Opens NIST with 4-1 Win Over Long Beach State

PLEASANTON, CA - UCLA (24-2) opened its schedule at the National Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Long Beach State. Results of UCLA's second scheduled game of the day, against UNC-Greensboro, are not yet available.
Against the 49ers, the Bruins capitalized on six extra-base hits, including a double and triple apiece from Natasha Watley, Stacey Nuveman and Taira Mims. Mims led the team with two RBI in the game, hitting Nuveman in twice.
UCLA got on the board for the first time in the second inning, on back-to-back doubles by Nuveman and Mims. In the fourth, UCLA increased its lead to 2-0, scoring on an RBI single by Crissy Buck. Long Beach State countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but UCLA scored two runs for the final 4-1 margin of victory. Amanda Freed earned the win in the circle for the Bruins, improving to 12-1 on the season. She struck out eight and walked two during her seven innings in the circle.
In addition to the matchup with UNC-Greensboro, UCLA is scheduled for a 6 pm game against a team from Pool D. Pool D includes Iowa, Georgia Tech and Syracuse. Saturday's game schedule is dependent upon the result of UCLA's 6 pm game.
