Trojans Use Long Ball in Baseball's 8-3 Win Against TCU

ROUND ROCK, Tx. - Senior outfielder Kris Cox hit a leadoff homer in the sixth for the go-ahead run Friday and the USC Trojans defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 8-3, in first day action at the 2002 Express College Classic at Dell Diamond. USC snapped its three-game losing streak.
USC improved to 7-8 overall on the season while TCU fell to 7-10. Freshman Matt Chico (2-1) got the win for the Trojans with five innings of relief, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and a season-high eight strikeouts.
USC center fielder Brian Barre hit a two-run home run to right in the top of the third, giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead. It was his team-leading fourth of the season. Cox followed with a single to right and two-base error by the Horned Frogs' Jake Duncan. He scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Alberto Concepcion for a 3-0 USC lead.
TCU third baseman Mike Settle led off the fourth with a single off reliever Matt Chico. He scored on a single by center fielder Marshall Wilson. Shortstop Shaff Elkouri then hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, to left to tie the game at 3-3.
In the top of the sixth, Cox hit his leadoff homer, his second of the season, for the Trojans. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta reached on a fielder's choice with two outs. He advanced to second on a passed ball by catcher Jonathan Marshall. USC designated hitter David Gordon walked on another passed ball, moving Lunetta to third. On a delayed steal, Lunetta stole home after an attempt to get Gordon at second for a 5-3 lead.
Pinch hitter Joey Metropoulos hit his third homer of the season with a three-run shot in the eighth to left. Metropoulos' homer hit the top of the clubhouse that is situated at least 450 feet from home plate.
The Trojans continue play tomorrow against No. 12 Notre Dame (March 9) at 3 p.m., and Creighton on Sunday (March 10) at 10 a.m. Both games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
