March 9, 2002
Head Coach Carrie Leary and the 2002 UCLA women's golf team will host the annual Pioneer Electronics Bruin Golf Classic at Menifee Lakes Country Club, Mar. 11-12, in Menifee, CA.
The 16-team field features six ranked teams, including the 16th ranked Bruins, No.17 California and No.22 Pepperdine, the two-time defending champion of the event. Other ranked teams participating are No.23 New Mexico, No.28 Oklahoma and No.43 San Francisco.
California has won three tournaments this season, including the last two, and New Mexico has won twice. Overall, six teams in the field have won at least once this season.
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, ranked second nationally, is the defending Pioneer Electronics Classic individual champion. Last season, Hull posted a three-under par, 54-hole total of 213 and won by three shots. Other ranked players among the field are Lisa Meldrum of Oklahoma, Pepperdine's Lindsay Wright, who won the event in 2000, Anne Walker of Cal and UCLA's Krystal Shearer.
Shearer will compete as an individual at this event. The Bruins' team will consist of freshmen Yvonne Choe and Charlotte Mayorkas, sophmores Johanna Andersson and Melissa Martin and junior Vivan Phosomran.
Choe led the Bruins in their last event, the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, by finishing in a tie for ninth place. Mayorkas tied for 39th, but fired a three-under par 69 in the second round. Martin has played in every round of every tournament this season and boasts one top 10 finish and two top 20 finishes. Andersson will be making her second appearance in the last three tournaments, and is the only UCLA player with a collegiate tournament victory on her record. As a freshman last year, she won the San Diego State Fall Classic.
