Track Routs Northwest Foes in Outdoor Season Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - Washington's men's and women's track squads today opened the outdoor track and field season with a sweep of Northwest collegiate opponents at the Salzman Invitational at Pacific Lutheran University. The Husky men finished with 170.5 points while the women amassed 168, each winning their division and giving the squad the combined title with a 338.5-174.5 edge over runner-up Central Washington.
Washington dominated the event with 19 individual victories, including a pair of wins by senior sprinter Shavon Hawkins. Hawkins won the 100-meter dash in 12.34 seconds, then finished the 200m dash in 25.50 seconds for her second victory.
Sophomore Brittiny Roberts became just the fifth Husky female to reach 40 feet in the triple jump, hitting the mark exactly in a victory of her own.
In men's competition, sophomore Marc James just missed qualifying for the Pac-10 Championships with a winning time of 14.77 seconds, just 0.03 seconds over the conference standard. Senior Mat Schwinn, likewise, just missed a Pac-10 mark in the discus, falling five feet short of the qualifying standard with a winning throw of 163 feet, eight inches.
The Huskies' 2002 freshman class also shined, with victories by newcomers Cambrielle Jensen (400m dash), Kate Soma (pole vault), Mia Norheim (discus), Phil Tabor (800m), Andy Fader (1500m), and Will Conwell (shot put).
Washington hosts its only home outdoor meet of the 2002 season this Sat., Mar. 16, welcoming collegiate and club squads from throughout the Northwest for the Husky Classic at Husky Stadium.
