Women's Track Finishes Second at NCAA Indoor Championships

The 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held this weekend (March 8-9) in Fayetteville, AR and hosted by the University of Arkansas. The competition was held at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Results from Saturday
On Saturday, Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's team, the two-time defending NCAA Indoor team champions finished second with 43 points. LSU edged out the Bruins, claiming the 2002 NCAA Indoor title with 57 points. Rounding out the top-five are Florida (third, 35), South Carolina (fourth, 31), Rice (fifth, 25).
Senior Darnesha Griffith, who captured the 2002 NCAA Indoor High Jump title, her first ever NCAA title, led the Bruins. With the win, Griffith scored 10 points for the Bruins. In the finals of the mile run, Lena Nilsson placed second (eight points). Sophomore Jessica Cosby placed sixth in the shot put (three points). The 1600m relay team placed fifth in 3:36.59.

-High Jump (final) - Senior Darnesha Griffith captured her first ever NCAA Indoor title with a jump of 6-00.75 (1.85m). Griffith's victory is the first Bruin Indoor High Jump title since Amy Acuff last won the event in 1997. It is the second time that Griffith has earned NCAA Indoor All-American honors (2001-02 - high jump).
-Mile (final) - Sophomore Lena Nilsson placed second in 4:38.88 (4:43.16 - qualifying). Heather Sagan of Liberty won the event in 4:38.52,
-Shot Put (final) - Sophomore Jessica Cosby placed sixth with a final throw of 53-10.50 (16.42m), earning All-American honors for the second time in her Bruin career (2001-02-shot put). Junior Chaniqua Ross finished 13th with a throw of 50-10 (15.49m).
-4x400m Relay (final) - The relay team of Ysanne Williams, Monique Henderson, Tiffany Burgess and Sheena Johnson finished fifth in a time of 3:36.59. South Carolina won the event in 3:30.36. The team earned All-America honors for its performance. It is the fifth time that Williams has received All-American honors (2001-02- Ind. 4x400m relay, 2001 - Out. 800m, Out. 4x400m,1999 - Out. 4x400m relay). Johnson received her third All-America honor (2001-02-Ind. 4x400m relay, 2001-Out. 4x400m relay). It is the first All-America honor for Burgess and Henderson.
