No. 12 Softball Crushes Simon Fraser, 13-0
March 10, 2002
SEATTLE - After a two-hour rain delay, the Washington softball team wasted little time in dominating Simon Fraser, defeating the Clan 13-0 in five innings Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the 12th-ranked Huskies won their season opener for the eighth time in the program's 10-year history to move to 21-7 overall. The Clan, meanwhile, fell to 7-2 in 2002, as the teams only played one game of their scheduled doubleheader.
The UW scored in each of its four at-bats, pushing across three runs in the first and third, six in the second and one in the fourth inning. The Huskies started the game off when lead-off batter Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) came around to score from second base on a single by sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.). Roach and teammate Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) would later add two more runs when freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) recorded two of her four RBI in the game with a single to center field.
Washington piled on more runs in the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Clark and sophomore Nicole Wicks (Renton, Wash.) each had RBI singles in the inning, while Rivera and freshman Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.) both drove in two runs apiece with a double and a triple, respectively.
After the Huskies increased their lead to 12-0 following the third inning, Clark tagged her 11th home run of the season with a shot to straight-away center field to round out the Husky scoring. The 13-run, 12-hit performance is the second straight game in which the UW has reached double-digits in hits and runs, notching a 15-5 win on 12 hits versus UC Santa Barbara on March 3.
In the circle, three Huskies pitchers combined for the team 10th shutout of the season. Sophomore Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) picked up her third straight win to move to 8-3 on the season, allowing two hits in three innings pitched. Freshmen Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) and Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief, as the Clan was only able to advance one base runner to second base.
Washington goes back out on the road the next two weeks, beginning with the team's 10th straight trip to the Kia Klassic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, March 14-17 in Fullerton, Calif. The Huskies face Utah and 10th-ranked Fresno State on Thursday, followed by a game with Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday.
