Bruin Men Start Home T & F Season Saturday At Drake Stadium

Art Venegas' UCLA men's track and field team will open the 2002 collegiate home outdoor campaign on Saturday (March 16) at Drake Stadium, hosting California and Washington State in an early-season Pac-10 meet (the Bruin women will also be competing).
The hammer competition will start at 8:30 a.m. and the rest of the field events will begin at 11 a.m. (with the men's pole vault starting at 11:30 a.m.). The first men's running event (3000m steeplechase) starts at 12:50 p.m. The meet will conclude at 3:55 p.m., with the 4 X 400m relays. There will be dual and triangular scoring for the meet.
The Bruin men last weekend (March 8-9) competed at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships, in Fayetteville, AR and hosted by the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center. UCLA had four athletes qualify for the 2002 Indoor meet and two earned All-American honors.

The Bruins qualified four athletes - senior Scott Moser in the 35lb. weight throw, sophomore Dan Ames and junior Scott Wiegand in the shot put and senior Michael Lipscomb in the 200m - and Moser and Ames earned All-American honors.
Ames placed 10th in the shot put (61-9 1/2, top eight Americans) and Moser was 11th in the weight throw (66-9 1/4, top eight Americans).
Wiegand was 15th in the shot put (60-3 3/4). Lipscomb, who qualified in the 200m with a mark of 20.99 (No. 8 on the 2002 indoor collegiate list), along with Florida's Taylor Jacobs, was disqualified in Friday's preliminaries and did not advance to the final.
2002 Home Schedule
Following Saturday's meet with California and Washington State, the Bruins will host two more home meets at Drake Stadium - Saturday, April 13 vs. BYU and CS Northridge and Saturday, May 4, vs. USC in the traditional UCLA/USC dual meets.
