Keira Goerl Named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA's Keira Goerl was named Pitcher of the Week while Stanford outfielder Jessica Mendoza has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week while for March 5 - 10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Goerl, from Moreno Valley, Calif., pitched more than half of UCLA's innings at the National Invitational Softball Tournament, recording 36 strikeouts in 23.0 innings in the circle. Opponents hit a measly 0.67 against Goerl (2-1 during the week), who threw her fourth no-hitter of the season against 17th-ranked Iowa. In that game, she struck out 12 and walked two.
On the year, Goerl is 13-2 with an 0.36 ERA. She has 143 strikeouts in 96.0 innings and has given up just five earned runs with opponents hitting a mere .100 against her in 2002.
Mendoza, from Camarillo, Calif., batted 9-for-19 (.474) this weekend in six starts at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Additionally, Mendoza scored 10 runs while tallying four home runs, six RBI, a double, two triples and a stolen base. For her efforts, she was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as the Cardinal went undefeated (6-0) in that event.
Overall this season, Mendoza is hitting .419 and leads the team in runs (32), home runs (7), total bases (70) and stolen bases (12). She also has an .814 slugging percentage.
It is the fifth weekly honor for Mendoza and the 17th for Stanford all-time. Goerl earns the second award of her career. UCLA has now received 63 honors all-time.
