WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD outfielder Jessica Mendoza has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week while UCLA's Keira Goerl was named Pitcher of the Week for March 5 - 10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Mendoza, from Camarillo, Calif., batted 9-for-19 (.474) this weekend in six starts at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Additionally, Mendoza scored 10 runs while tallying four home runs, six RBI, a double, two triples and a stolen base. For her efforts, she was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as the Cardinal went undefeated (6-0) in that event.
Overall this season, Mendoza is hitting .419 and leads the team in runs (32), home runs (7), total bases (70) and stolen bases (12). She also has an .814 slugging percentage.
Goerl, from Moreno Valley, Calif., pitched more than half of UCLA's innings at the NIST, recording 36 strikeouts in 23.0 innings in the circle. Opponents hit a measly 0.67 against Goerl (2-1 during the week), who threw her fourth no-hitter of the season against 17th-ranked Iowa. In that game, she struck out 12 and walked two.
