Baseball Hammers No. 20 San Diego, 15-5

SAN DIEGO - Senior center fielder Brian Barre went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI Wednesday and the USC Trojans defeated the No. 20 San Diego Toreros, 15-5, in non-conference action at Cunningham Stadium. The Trojans used a 20-hit attack and have scored 38 runs in their last four games.
USC improves to 9-9 overall while San Diego falls to 18-5 on the season.
San Diego scored first on an RBI single by catcher S.C. Assael in the bottom of the first. USC responded with six runs in the second. With runners at first and second, freshman Joey Metropolous hit a double down the left field line. Junior right fielder David Gordon plated Alberto Concepcion on a groundout to short. Michael Moon and sophomore shortstop Rafael Torres hit back-to-back singles before Barre hit his first homer with a three-run shot to right.
Torres went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the afternoon.
Freshman J.P. Howell (3-2) registered the win for the Trojans, going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Barre hit his second homer as part of a five-run fifth inning for the Trojans. Gordon, starting in only his third game of the 2002 season due to a broken right thumb, went 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI.
The Trojans travel to Pepperdine on Saturday (March 16) and Sunday (March 17) with 1 p.m. starts for both games. Both games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
