Bruins Sweep Gauchos in Softball Doubleheader
March 13, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved its record to 29-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Easton Stadium, defeating UC Santa Barbara with game scores of 7-1 and 4-0. UCLA now enters a 12-day break, which will include final exams for winter quarter, before playing host to No. 10 Fresno State on Monday, March 25.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Bruins scored one run in bases-loaded situations in each of the first two innings before breaking out for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fourth, Erin Rahn led off for the Bruins and became UCLA's first base runner of the inning after being hit by a pitch. Following a single by Natasha Watley, an Amanda Freed single scored Rahn, and brought up designated player Claire Sua, who crushed a home run over the left field scoreboard on a very blustery day at Easton Stadium. Julie Hoshizaki would score the final run of the inning for UCLA, as she pinch-ran following a Stacey Nuveman double and scored on a long single by Tairia Mims.
Freed started the game in the circle for the Bruins, and went five innings to earn her 14th victory of the season. Sua pitched the final two frames, allowing two hits.
The nightcap saw Keira Goerl take to the circle for UCLA, where she struck out eight, walked one and allowed just two hits while improving her season record to 14-1. The Bruins opened the scoring in the first inning, with Natasha Watley circling the bases on a bunt single, stolen base, and two wild pitches. The Bruins added three more runs in the second inning, with a two-RBI triple by Watley, and an RBI single by Freed.
UCLA returns to action on Monday, March 25, when the Bruins play host to Fresno State. First pitch between the Bruins and Bulldogs is scheduled for 1 pm at Easton Stadium.
