Tara VanDerveer One Of Eight Finalists For WBCA National Coach Of The Year Honors

ATLANTA, Ga. - Stanford University women's basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer has been named as one of eight finalists for the 2001-02 Russell Athletic Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division I National Coach of the Year Award.
VanDerveer, who has guided the Cardinal to the NCAA Tournament in each of her last 14 seasons, has already been named the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and is one of 20 finalists for the Naismith College Women's Basketball Coach of the Year Award.
In 22-plus seasons on collegiate sidelines, VanDerveer is 546-155 (.779). In 15-plus seasons on The Farm (VanDerveer took the 1995-96 season off to coach the gold-medal winning United States Olympic Team), she is 394-104 (.791) and has led Stanford to two NCAA Championships (1989-90 & 1991-92) and five Final Four appearances.
Joining VanDerveer as WBCA Division I Coach of the Year finalists are Geno Auriemma (Connecticut), Gail Goestenkors (Duke), Susan Wavlvius (South Carolina), Keith Freeman (Valparaiso), Deb Patterson (Kansas State), Brenda Oldfield (Minnesota) and Leon Barmore (Louisiana Tech).
The winner will be announced on Wed., March 27 at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.
