BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (14-9) won one-of-three games versus No. 1 ranked Stanford Mar. 8-10 at Evans Diamond (L 15-4, W 2-1, L 4-2) and defeated San Francisco, 12-4, Tuesday at Evans Diamond...in Cal's 2-1 victory over the top-ranked Cardinal, sophomore right-hander Brian Montalbo pitched what was probably the best outing of his college career, throwing a career-high 7.3 innings with five hits, one run, one walk and three strikeouts...even though he suffered the loss to Stanford on Mar. 8, senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson, a third team Preseason All-American in Baseball America, had a shutout and pitched to the minimum number of Cardinal batters through 6.0 innings, recording five strikeouts with no walks...in six starts Hutchinson is 4-2 with an 3.04 ERA and has a team-high 47.3 innings pitch with 46 strikeouts and only seven walks...he has 236 career strikeouts, third on Cal's all-time career list and is 40 strikeouts away from being the school's all-time strikeout leader...another pitcher for the Bears that is moving up on the school's career list is sophomore right-hander Matt Brown, who is already tied for sixth on the Cal all-time saves list with 11 saves in less than two seasons...sophomore first baseman Conor Jackson is continuing his remarkable 2002 campaign, batting .385 with four doubles, two triples, seven home runs, two grand slams and 26 RBI...earlier this year, he hit a home run in three consecutive games, including his first collegiate grand slam Feb. 8 versus Gonzaga...on Mar. 5 Jackson hit a game-winning grand slam in the 10th inning against Georgetown...
